President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced the government’s plans to replace all old ferries and upgrade port facilities nationwide during a tour of a new ferry acquired from Greece. The ferry, built in 2024, is designed to operate on the Georgetown to Region One route, accommodating 284 passengers and 51 cars.

While specific costs for the new vessel were not disclosed during the President’s visit, he emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the country’s maritime fleet. “Incrementally, over the next three years, we will be looking at replacing all the older vessels so we can have the same level of service in all of the regions,” President Ali stated.
The government is actively reviewing options in the global marketplace for newer vessels to improve services, particularly for the Georgetown to Region Seven route. This initiative follows the recent commissioning of the MV Konawaruk 1899, which aims to address the high demand on the Parika-Supenaam route.
