As part of its ongoing nationwide streetlight installation program intended to enhance community safety, the government is adopting a tougher stance against the theft of these public assets. Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, made this announcement today ahead of the installation of additional streetlights across the country.

During a live broadcast from Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD), where a new shipment of streetlights is being stored, Edghill expressed the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of these installations. “I want to make it very clear: Anybody who’s being caught with stolen Government of Guyana lights will face the full force of the law,” he stated. He also noted that every streetlight leaving the storage facility will now feature a special laser mark to aid in prosecution efforts.
The Minister referenced a troubling incident on the Heroes Highway, where three out of ten newly installed streetlights were stolen within days. “We have to follow up with the police to make sure we get images from the cameras,” Edghill explained, emphasizing that similar thefts have been reported across the country. Citizens have complained that while they enjoyed illuminated streets for a few days, the lights disappeared almost overnight.
To further combat this issue, Edghill encouraged citizens to report stolen government property through the ministry’s hotline at 624-2964. “You can call, send images, as well as give information. Your confidentiality will be respected, and security forces will take appropriate action,” he assured the public.
Once properly marked, the newly procured streetlights will be installed nationwide, although specific locations for the installation have yet to be disclosed. The government has procured a total of 100,000 streetlights, with approximately 18,000 already installed in various communities.
Minister Edghill emphasized that the initiative aligns with a commitment made by President Dr. Irfaan Ali to improve citizen security. He noted that alongside other initiatives involving law enforcement agencies, the streetlight installation program aims to enhance safety in both residential areas and on main roads, thereby reducing the risks of theft and harassment.
“Improving community security and citizen safety is a top priority,” he concluded, reiterating the government’s dedication to ensuring well-lit environments for all citizens.
