FGM to Boycott Budget Presentation Over Lack of Opposition Leadership

News

The Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) has declared its decision to boycott the upcoming National Budget presentation on January 26th, citing the absence of a Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly. Ashni Singh, the Minister of Finance, is set to deliver the budget; however, FGM representatives insist they will not attend as a form of protest against the government’s failure to call a meeting for the election of the Opposition Leader.

In a statement, FGM emphasized that the government cannot treat the budget presentation as normal proceedings while the Parliament remains structurally incomplete due to their own inaction. The party condemned the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) for creating a facade of normalcy while neglecting constitutional requirements.

FGM raised critical questions regarding the funding of the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, which receives state support. They questioned how the budget for this office was determined without an elected Leader of the Opposition in place.

“This is not merely about individual interests or personalities. It concerns the functional integrity of our democracy and whether the government can operate unilaterally due to its majority,” stated Hon. Amanza Walton, an FGM Member of Parliament. She underscored that this situation reflects a broader disrespect for the Constitution and the citizens of Guyana.

Before the Minister presents the budget figures, FGM insists the Speaker must convene a meeting for the opposition members to elect their leader. The party called for an end to constitutional gamesmanship and urged the government to respect the people of Guyana, reiterating that governance should serve the public interest.
