An operator has been fined after pleading guilty to illegal mining during an appearance at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court. The arrest was part of routine inspections aimed at ensuring compliance with the Guyana Mining Act and Regulations, conducted across several mining operations in the Essequibo River.

According to a release from the Ministry of Natural Resources, the inspections revealed that out of nine operations assessed, one was in violation of regulations. The operation, identified as J-199/000/10 and overseen by Jonathan Rodrigues, was found to be mining without the necessary permission and within a designated buffer zone.

The general manager of the operation was discovered in possession of 1 ounce and 13 dwt of gold, leading to his arrest and subsequent court appearance. The seized gold has been lodged at the headquarters of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC).

Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat, emphasized the government’s commitment to strict enforcement of the law, stating, “We will not tolerate illegal activities that undermine our laws and jeopardize our natural resources. We will remain steadfast in honouring our commitment to rigorous enforcement of the law to safeguard the integrity of our mining sector.”

The ministry also reminded operators to conduct their business legally, warning that all offenders will face consequences without fear or favor.
