Police in Regional Division Seven have launched an investigation into an armed robbery that occurred on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, targeting a 32-year-old gold miner from Blankenburg, West Coast Demerara.

The incident took place between 4:30 PM and 5:00 PM when the miner was traveling from a mining pit to his camp with two co-workers on an all-terrain vehicle (ATV). During their journey, they were intercepted by an armed assailant who emerged from nearby bushes and ordered them to dismount.
According to preliminary investigations, the suspect discharged a firearm during the confrontation, injuring one of the co-workers, a 62-year-old Brazilian gold miner, in his left foot above the ankle. Shortly after, two additional masked gunmen, reportedly armed with firearms, joined the initial suspect.
The miners were then taken to their camp, which was ransacked by the armed suspects. However, police confirmed that no valuables were obtained during the raid.
The suspects made their getaway with the ATV, fleeing in an unknown direction. The injured miner has since been transported to the Bartica Regional Hospital, where he is receiving medical attention.
Authorities are actively working to locate and apprehend the suspects as the investigation continues. The police urge anyone with information about the incident to come forward to assist in their efforts.
