Terrorism Accused Jhonny Boodram to Challenge Confession Statement

News

Twenty-seven-year-old Jhonny Boodram, one of the taxi drivers charged in connection with a deadly gas station bombing, has notified the Court, through his attorney Mikel Puran, of his intention to challenge the admissibility of any confession statement in the case.

Boodram is jointly charged with Daniel Alexander Ramirez Poedemo, Alexander Bettencourt, and Kystal LaCruz with terrorism at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. Other suspects, Wayne Corriea, Ramesh Pramdeo, and Jennifer Rodriguez, are facing similar charges at the Leonora Magistrates’ Court. The bombing, which occurred on October 27, 2025, tragically claimed the life of a six-year-old girl.

He is accused of transporting suspected bombers to execute the attack on the Mobil Gas Station located on Regent Street. However, through his attorney, Boodram asserts that he had no knowledge of the bombing plan.

During the Court proceedings today, acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty noted that Boodram’s absent attorney had submitted a bundle of documents as part of the defense’s disclosure. “Mr. Boodram’s attorney indicates that he wishes to challenge the admissibility of any confession statement, whether recorded or written,” the Chief Magistrate informed the Court.

Meanwhile, attorney Tifaine Rutherford, representing Kystal LaCruz, indicated that they would also be presenting statements on behalf of LaCruz.

Venezuelan nationals Daniel Alexander Ramirez Poedemo, the prime suspect, and Alexander Bettencourt remain unrepresented. Both expressed to the acting Chief Magistrate a desire to secure legal counsel but stated they had been unable to contact their families in Venezuela.

The Chief Magistrate instructed a prison officer to facilitate communication between the suspects and their families. While Bettencourt managed to contact his wife, Ramirez Poedemo reported difficulties reaching his mother. The prison officer assured the Court that the Welfare Division would assist in these efforts.

The defense attorneys have been given until January 28, 2025, to finalize the disclosure of all statements, with hopes that by then, both Ramirez Poedemo and Bettencourt will secure counsel. The case is scheduled to return to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on February 4 at 10 AM for a report.
