The enhancement project includes the construction of new washroom facilities aimed at improving sanitation and overall comfort for both vendors and patrons. Phillips characterized the initiative as a significant investment by the Government of Guyana, focused on improving working conditions and enhancing the livelihoods of market vendors.

“These are meaningful investments by the Government to enhance and improve the livelihoods of vendors,” he stated.

To enable the construction work, vendors were requested to vacate their stalls by January 7 and are currently operating along Stelling Road adjacent to the Rosignol Market. Business continues as usual from Monday to Friday during the construction period, allowing vendors to maintain their income while upgrades are underway.

The project is being managed by the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, with a dedicated effort to enhance the overall market experience for both vendors and customers. A contract for the renovations has already been signed, reflecting the Government’s commitment to the upgrade.

Addressing concerns from vendors about limited visible activity on-site, Phillips assured that early-stage work has commenced. “You wouldn’t see much work on site right now. An excavator was mobilized, and preliminary land-clearing works were executed. The majority of the work is being done off-site because it’s a steel frame. Once completed, it will be transported and assembled on-site,” he explained.

Phillips reassured vendors that the project is on course, emphasizing that the upgraded market will offer a cleaner, safer, and more modern space—ultimately enhancing business opportunities and improving the daily experience for everyone who uses the facility.
