Gold Miner Charged with Multiple Traffic Offenses in Bartica

Keon Johnson, a 21-year-old gold miner from Mongrippa Hill, has been charged with several traffic offenses, including Dangerous Driving, Breach of Condition of the Prescribed Certificate of Fitness, and Driving a Motor Vehicle While Exceeding the Prescribed Breath Alcohol Limit. These charges are in violation of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02.

On Monday, February 2, 2026, Johnson appeared before His Worship Teriq Mohamed at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded guilty to all three offenses.

The court imposed the following penalties:

  • Dangerous Driving: A fine of $40,000 GYD or one month of imprisonment.
  • Breach of Condition of the Prescribed Certificate of Fitness: A fine of $10,000 GYD or two weeks of imprisonment.
  • Driving While Exceeding the Breath Alcohol Limit: A fine of $200,000 GYD or four weeks of imprisonment.

In total, Johnson was fined $250,000 GYD, which can also be served as ten weeks of imprisonment if not paid. The case highlights ongoing concerns about road safety and adherence to traffic regulations in the region.
