Digital wallet services are on the horizon for Guyana, as two banks are poised to introduce modern electronic payment systems following approval from the Bank of Guyana. This significant development was announced by President Dr. Irfaan Ali during the opening ceremony of the Guyana Energy Conference and Supply Chain Expo 2026.

President Ali emphasized the importance of transitioning to a digital economy, stating, “We want our economy to run on a digital backbone.” He expressed his satisfaction at the completion of processes at the Central Bank to establish a national payment platform.
“The two local banks are ready to fully embrace the digital platform; they’ve already been approved. This means we can now have digital wallets, digital payment systems, and digital transfers here in Guyana. That will be the new standard,” he added.
The introduction of digital wallet services is expected to enhance the efficiency of financial transactions and further modernize the banking landscape in Guyana.
