On February 17, 2026, an operation by police in Regional Division #6 led to the arrest of a 24-year-old laborer from Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje Berbice. The action was taken between 2:30 a.m. and 2:55 a.m. following the circulation of a disturbing video on social media.
The footage shows a traffic officer being assaulted by the suspect, who approached the officer while brandishing a glass bottle and subsequently attacked him.
As a result of the operation, an unregistered Haojue motorcycle was seized and is currently held for investigation purposes. The suspect is expected to face charges for assaulting a peace officer, along with other related offences.
The Guyana Police Force has issued a strong statement condemning acts of violence against its members while they carry out their duties. They emphasized that such assaults and interference with police operations are serious crimes and will be prosecuted accordingly. Investigations are ongoing.
