Traffic Offences Result in Court Appearances for Four Men from Essequibo Coast

Four men from the Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon–Supenaam), appeared in the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court last week facing various traffic offences under the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act.

Zaphnath Williams

Zaphnath Williams, 26, a construction worker from Bush Lot, was charged with driving while exceeding the legal alcohol limit. This offence allegedly occurred on February 8, 2026, at Anna Regina Public Road. Williams pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir and was granted bail in the amount of $200,000, with the case adjourned to March 11.

Ganesh Dupan

In a separate case, Ganesh Dupan of Reliance faced similar charges for an incident on February 6, 2026. Dupan pleaded guilty to driving while his breath alcohol level exceeded the prescribed limit. As a result, he was fined $200,000 or, in default, three months’ imprisonment.

Kamraj Gildharie

Kamraj Gildharie, 44, a security guard from Richmond Coconut Dam, faced multiple charges stemming from an incident on November 15, 2025. He was charged with:

  • Being an unlicensed driver
  • Refusing to provide a breath specimen for a breath alcohol test
  • Operating an uninsured motor vehicle
  • Operating an uncertified motor vehicle
  • Operating an unlicensed motor vehicle

Gildharie pleaded guilty to being an unlicensed driver, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and operating an unlicensed motor vehicle. He received fines of $30,000 for the unlicensed driver charge (three months’ imprisonment in default), $40,000 for the uninsured vehicle (three months’ imprisonment in default), and $10,000 for the unlicensed motor vehicle charge (one month’s imprisonment in default). He pleaded not guilty to the refusal of a breath specimen and was granted bail of $200,000, with an additional bail of $10,000 for operating an uncertified vehicle. The matter was adjourned to March 17.

Govinash Persaud

Govinash Persaud, 39, a secretary from Reliance, was charged with driving while his breath alcohol level exceeded the legal limit. This incident occurred on October 5, 2025, at Anna Regina Public Road. Initially pleading not guilty, Persaud later changed his plea to guilty when the matter was heard before Magistrate Mohabir. He was fined $200,000 or, in default, three months’ imprisonment.

The court continues to address various traffic-related offences in a bid to enforce road safety compliance in the region.
