The Ministry of Agriculture is poised to launch a new digital app designed to enhance farmers’ access to real-time agricultural support, including essential soil management guidance and weather forecasts. Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha made the announcement during his recent appearance on the Starting Point podcast.

The app aims to provide comprehensive agricultural information, allowing users to access real-time data based on their specific locations. “You can go on that app and get weather forecasts, and get all the soil mapping. If you go to Black Bush Polder, it will tell you what can grow there; if you go to Linden, it will provide similar insights,” Mustapha stated.

The app will source accurate and actionable information from the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute, enabling farmers to make better-informed decisions tailored to their particular regions. Mustapha emphasized that the platform will offer recommendations on the best crops suited for various areas, ultimately helping farmers identify better market opportunities.

This initiative is part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to modernize the agriculture sector through digital solutions, effectively putting timely and reliable data directly into the hands of farmers. Mustapha expressed optimism that a data center, expected to be commissioned by the end of next month, will further enhance agricultural data availability for the wider Caribbean. This center aims to provide detailed information on weather patterns, soil types, and suitable crops for various territories, mirroring a model observed during President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s visit to Costa Rica.

“Farmers often cling to traditional methods of farming, and our goal is to shift that mindset and embrace modern technology,” Mustapha explained.

Additionally, the minister outlined plans to enhance the fishing industry through digital platforms and infrastructure upgrades. Over 500 fishing vessels have already been equipped with tracking devices, and the Fisherfolk Organisation is collaborating with the government to provide digital training and implement tracking systems for fisherfolk.

These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to modernizing agricultural practices and supporting local farmers in adapting to more efficient and progressive methods.
