Kaieteur News Reports : In a remarkable recovery, 15-year-old Tiana Chapman has been discharged from the New Amsterdam Hospital two weeks after surviving a brutal knife attack that left her with over 25 stab wounds. The teenager had fought for her life in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is now able to walk again, a recovery her family describes as “miraculous.”

Tiana’s mother, Adisea Andrews, expressed her relief at her daughter’s survival, clarifying that the actual number of stab wounds was higher than initially reported. The attack took place on February 24 when 28-year-old Christopher Ali, Tiana’s former boyfriend and the father of her child, allegedly ambushed her at a friend’s home.

Reports indicate that Ali cornered Tiana and repeatedly stabbed her before fleeing the scene, leaving her severely wounded. For several days, she was on an oxygen machine while doctors worked to stabilize her condition. Despite the severity of her injuries, Tiana began showing signs of improvement, culminating in her discharge from the hospital.

Speaking to Kaieteur News as she prepared to leave, Tiana appeared in good spirits, despite discomfort from her injuries. She reflected on the attack, stating that it happened suddenly.

Andrews shared her distress regarding her daughter’s involvement with Ali, emphasizing that she never approved of their relationship. “How could I ever want that to happen when Tiana is a child?” she said, recalling that Ali grew up in their close-knit community.

Tiana, who will turn 16 in May, is a mother to 10-month-old Javed Chapman. Andrews explained that she was working as a cook at a mining camp during the incident and could not reach the hospital until the following Friday due to logistical challenges. She defended herself against criticism, asserting that she always ensures her children are provided for and that claims of abandonment are false.

She also mentioned previous incidents where she had contacted the police regarding Ali’s late-night visits to their home, but officers failed to apprehend him.

As police in Berbice continue their search for Ali, Tiana’s recovery highlights both the resilience of the human spirit and the challenges faced by young individuals in vulnerable situations.
