In an interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI), Village Toshao Ivor Daniels highlighted that many projects are already benefiting the community, while others are nearing completion.

One significant project is a cassava farming and processing facility that employs residents from Annai and neighboring communities. Funded through the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS), the facility operates on two-week rotating shifts, allowing both men and women to participate in the workforce.

“We are really happy that we were able to get that funding… At least six people are working at a time,” said Daniels. He explained that women primarily handle the processing, while men focus on heavier tasks like cutting firewood and clearing land.

The processed cassava products are sold to residents and visitors, with Daniels noting, “Even I go and buy the cassava products there.”

Annai has received approximately $24 million in LCDS funding. To bolster the local agricultural sector and businesses, the village has acquired a canter truck to assist with transportation challenges. “The business is getting bigger, but we didn’t have transportation,” Daniels explained, emphasizing the necessity of the vehicle for transporting goods.

Additionally, a newly constructed salon in the village is set to open once necessary equipment is purchased. While two residents have completed training to manage the facility, it remains closed pending the arrival of furnishings and tools. There are also plans to develop a barber shop extension in the same area to offer more grooming services.

On the agricultural front, a women-led pepper farming project is underway, which was revitalized after initial crop damage. Farmers are also encouraged to diversify their production with crops like watermelon, callaloo, and shallots to maximize land use. Plans are in place to create a centralized agricultural area showcasing the cassava factory, pepper farms, and other agricultural activities.

Annai is also expanding into tourism, with two reservoirs and lodges being developed near the Rupununi River. This area has already generated interest, with tourism officials praising its scenic beauty and potential as a destination.

Another LCDS-funded project involves creating a small recreational and wildlife area for children, allotted approximately $1.5 million for development near a local pond. This space will include seating, a small bridge, and shaded areas for family gatherings.

Several other infrastructure projects are nearing completion, including repairs to the existing village office and the construction of a new office building, which is awaiting official commissioning. Additionally, an elevated structure is being built as a scenic viewing area for residents and visitors, part of broader efforts to modernize the village’s administrative and recreational facilities.
