Police say a Guyanese/Canadian couple scheduled to depart Guyana for Toronto on Thursday night was detained after suspected raw gold was found in their carry-on luggage.

In a release, police reported that the yellow metal was discovered on Thursday at about 07:20 hrs during screening procedures at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri.
Preliminary investigations revealed the suspected raw gold was found in the carry-on of a 62-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman, both Guyanese/Canadian citizens.
The incident was reported, and the two passengers were detained by Customs officials for further processing. Police said the metal was weighed in their presence and amounted to 15.521 ounces, after which it was secured.
Investigations are ongoing.
Police also noted that any gold produced must be declared and sold to the Guyana Gold Board or to licensed agents, and that exporting requires proper licensing and authorisation.
