OPR Launches Investigation After Otis Payne Dies in Police Custody

Following the death of Otis John Jordan Payne, 30, of South Haslington, East Coast Demerara, while in custody at the Cove and John Police Station, the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the matter.

Police said that, as part of the probe, several police and civilian witnesses have been interviewed and statements obtained.

In the meantime, two ranks attached to the station have been placed under close arrest and are assisting with the investigation.

The Guyana Police Force said it wishes to assure the public that the matter is being treated with the seriousness it warrants and that all necessary procedures are being followed as investigations continue.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted on Friday, March 27, 2026.
