Speaking on the planned project, President Ali said the zoo must be celebrated as a cornerstone of Guyana’s culture, heritage, and biodiversity and that the upcoming investment will reflect that vision.

“I’m pleased to announce that the Georgetown Zoo and Botanical Gardens transformation project will commence, with an investment that would make it the pride of South America,” President Ali said.

The Head of State outlined that the transformation will span several dimensions, with investments directed at recreation, education, tourism, and biodiversity awareness. The revamped facility will also be integrated into the broader urban development of Georgetown, connected to the city’s planned green architecture, commercial spaces, and waterfront walkways.

The announcement builds on the Government’s existing partnership with the United Kingdom-based King’s Foundation, which is working alongside Guyana to restore Georgetown to its historic identity as the Garden City of the Caribbean.
