Motorist Charged with Causing Death by Dangerous Driving After Pedestrian Struck on Providence Public Road

Guyana Times Reports : A 44-year-old motorist has been placed on bail after being charged in connection with a fatal accident along the Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara, which claimed the life of a 52-year-old pedestrian earlier this month.

Maurice Menezes of Coverden Public Road, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrates’ Court, where he faced a charge of causing death by dangerous driving, contrary to Section 35(1) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02. He denied the charge and was released on $300,000 bail. The matter has been adjourned to May 20.

Dead is Matthew Van-Veen, formerly of Castello Housing Scheme, East La Penitence, Georgetown.

The incident occurred at approximately 18:30 hours on April 18, in the vicinity of the GuyOil service station along the Providence Public Road. Investigations revealed that Van-Veen was crossing the roadway from west to east, carrying a five-gallon container of fuel, when he was struck by a Ford Raptor pickup truck bearing licence plate GAB 5505, owned and driven by Menezes.

Following the collision, Van-Veen was assisted by the driver and members of the public and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation in a semi-conscious condition. He later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
