Following the tragic home invasion in Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, earlier today, the Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Oneidge Walrond, has issued the following statement:

“The brutal killing of seven-year-old Adriel Aftab Mohamed has deeply saddened and disturbed me. This was a horrific act of violence that has left a family grieving, a community in mourning, and a nation struggling to comprehend the loss of such a young and innocent life.
I extend my deepest condolences to Adriel’s parents, siblings, and every member of his family as they confront a loss no family should ever have to endure.
I also wish his great-grandmother, Halima Itwari, a full and swift recovery. At 72 years old, she sustained serious injuries during the same attack, and her suffering must also be acknowledged. I continue to keep her in my thoughts and prayers as she recovers.
I have been briefed on this matter, and the Guyana Police Force has been directed to utilise every available resource in the investigation. Every effort is being made to identify those responsible, bring them into custody, and ensure they face the full consequences of the law. The circumstances surrounding this crime demand a thorough and urgent response.
To the residents of Zeelugt and surrounding communities, I understand the fear and concern this tragedy has caused. When a child and an elderly woman can be attacked in their own home, the sense of safety that every family deserves is shaken. Be assured that this matter is being treated with the seriousness it warrants.
I urge anyone with information that may assist investigators to come forward without delay. Even the smallest detail may prove critical in securing justice for Adriel and his family.
A family is grieving, a community is in mourning, and a young life has been taken far too soon. May God grant strength and comfort to Adriel’s family during this difficult time, and may his soul rest in peace.”
