A fatal multi-vehicle collision occurred on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at approximately 6:42 a.m. on the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge Access Road, resulting in the death of a 65-year-old Cuban national.

The victim, identified as Gerardo Machado Valdivia of Providence, East Bank Demerara, was attempting to cross the road from south to north when he was struck.
According to initial police reports, a motor car (PAG 6631) driven by a 22-year-old male was traveling west along the southern driving lane. The driver attempted to avoid a collision by braking and swerving, but the vehicle’s right-side front portion still struck Valdivia.
The impact flung the pedestrian onto the northern carriageway, where he sustained fatal head and body injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by an attending physician.
Following the initial impact, the driver of the first vehicle (PAG 6631) reportedly lost control, causing the car to collide with the concrete median. The vehicle then spun into the northern carriageway, where it subsequently collided with two other vehicles—a motor car (PAM 2461) and a motor hire car (HC 723)—both of which were traveling east at the time.
The Guyana Police Force has taken the three drivers involved into custody to assist with the ongoing investigation. Breathalyzer tests were administered to all three drivers, and officials confirmed that no trace of alcohol was found in their systems.
Valdivia’s remains have been transported to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Mortuary to await a post-mortem examination.
