Lorry Driver Later Apprehended

Police in Regional Division #2 are investigating a fatal ‘hit and run’ accident that occurred on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at approximately 14:25 hrs on Queenstown Public Road, Essequibo Coast, resulting in the death of a 27-year-old motorcyclist.

The accident involved a motor lorry (GAG 7158) driven by 33-year-old Lloyd Roberts from Bushlot New Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast, and a motorcycle (CJ 7634) owned and operated by Ganesh Ragubir (now deceased), a 27-year-old from Lot 13 Adventure, Essequibo Coast.

According to the lorry driver, he was proceeding north along the western driving lane while the motorcyclist was traveling south in the eastern lane. The driver alleged that the motorcyclist attempted to overtake a car that was also heading south in front of him. During this maneuver, the motorcyclist lost control and collided with the front right-side door of the lorry before falling onto the roadway, sustaining severe head injuries.

After the collision, the lorry driver slowed down and stopped a distance away but then drove off in a northern direction. He was later intercepted by police officers and escorted to the Anna Regina Police Station.

The body of the motorcyclist was found in an unconscious state and was transported to Suddie Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival at approximately 15:45 hrs by Dr. Munesh Chowbay. The body has been taken to the Suddie Public Hospital Mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination.

Both the lorry and motorcycle have been lodged at the Anna Regina Police Station compound for examination by the region’s licensing and certifying officer. The lorry driver remains in police custody, assisting with the investigation.
