Traffic Chief Warns: Violent Resisters to Law Enforcement Will Be Tased

In light of the increase in violent assaults on traffic policemen executing their official duties across the country, traffic ranks are facing significant challenges in enforcing the laws of Guyana. A notable number of citizens are determined to break the laws by committing traffic breaches and failing to cooperate with police when caught.

It has become common for offenders (motorists) to attack traffic ranks, who are unarmed at all times.

“I want to re-emphasize that this type of behavior by our citizens will not be condoned by the Guyana Police Force, especially the Department. Anyone found committing a traffic offense in this country and who violently resists or assaults our traffic officers will be met with the full force of the law,” stated Traffic Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mahendra Singh.

“I have instructed all traffic officers throughout the country to continue enforcing the laws as mandated by the Police Act Chapter 16:01 and to be prepared to deal appropriately with violators who attempt to resist them violently,” he declared.

With recent social media posts showing members of the public assaulting police ranks in uniform with impunity, the Guyana Police Force has initiated training for ranks in the use of less-than-lethal and non-lethal force. The Traffic Chief announced that traffic ranks will now be issued taser guns to protect themselves and properly subdue offenders while enforcing the laws and bringing them to justice.

“No longer will members of the public be allowed to violently assault members of the Force with impunity during law enforcement. All offenders are forewarned that anyone committing traffic violations and failing to cooperate with the Police, as mandated by the Constitution of Guyana, will be dealt with according to the law,” the Traffic Chief disclosed.

Offenders who attack law enforcement officers, especially traffic policemen, will be properly tased, arrested, and brought to justice. Taser guns will be used as a means of minimum non-lethal force, effectively as provided for by law.
