30-Year-Old West Berbice Man Charged for Assaulting Police Rank

— Remanded to Prison, Facing Additional Charges

Akeem Smith, a 30-year-old reservist soldier from West Coast Berbice, was charged on Monday, June 2, 2025, and remanded to prison for assaulting a police rank. Smith appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Sunil Scarce, facing the following charges:

Refusal to Consent to Breathalyzer Test

Pleaded guilty and was fined $50,000.

Resisting Peace Officer

Pleaded guilty and was fined $20,000.

Disorderly Behavior

Pleaded guilty and was fined $15,000.

Assaulting a Peace Officer

Pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison.

The matter was adjourned to June 11, 2025, for a hearing at the Mahaicony Magistrate’s Court.
