Commissioning of the Centre for Equity, Opportunity, and Innovation in Plymara

The Centre for Equity, Opportunity, and Innovation at Plymara has been officially commissioned, thanks to the efforts of the Office of the First Lady, Her Excellency Mrs. Arya Alli. The centre, located in Plymara, East Berbice-Corentyne, was inaugurated with a simple ceremony yesterday.

Minister Rodrigues, who has been actively involved since the project’s inception, expressed pride in collaborating with the Office of the First Lady. She acknowledged the essential role played by the Ministry of Housing and Water, through the Central Housing and Planning Authority, in making this project a reality. Engineers from the Projects Department designed and supervised the construction of the facility.

The Minister noted that the government is committed to ensuring that all programs and policies promote equity.

“In all our initiatives, we strive to create opportunities, foster unity, and ensure equity. We have exceeded our targets in delivering housing,” she stated. She highlighted that the administration’s focus goes beyond simply checking off items on its manifesto. “We emphasize continuity. In Region 6, we have distributed 5,000 house lots and built 300 houses in Plymara, ensuring that individuals living with disabilities have equal opportunities in the housing sector.”

First Lady Arya Ali also emphasized that 120 persons with disabilities (PWDs) will be directly employed at the centre, providing them not only with job opportunities but also with dignity, purpose, and a chance to contribute to Guyana’s progress.

NCD Chairman Mr. Ganesh Singh praised this initiative, highlighting that it offers greater training opportunities across all sectors. Over the past five years, more than 300 persons with disabilities have received training. Additionally, the centre will initially employ 100 individuals in the catering sector.

Among those in attendance were Regional Chairman Mr. David Armogan, Senior Minister within the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, and other distinguished guests.

The new facility features five workstations that will enable individuals to manufacture a variety of products, including crafts and snacks. It also includes a retail space for selling these products, a boardroom for meetings and training, a therapy room, a cafeteria, and washrooms.
