Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, has reaffirmed the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) administration’s commitment to electoral transparency and accountability, announcing plans to invite multiple reputable international observer missions for the upcoming September 1 General and Regional Elections.

During his weekly program, “Issues in the News,” on Tuesday evening, Nandlall welcomed the announcement that the Carter Center, founded by the late former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, will send an observer team to Guyana for the elections.
“Many more international observer teams will be invited and will be welcomed to observe the elections,” he stated, emphasizing that the PPP has “nothing to hide.” He underscored the importance of transparency, recalling past electoral irregularities.
Nandlall noted that the PPP fought for 28 years to secure the right to invite international observers, as previous administrations, particularly the PNC, had blocked their presence to facilitate election rigging. “It’s only in 1992, after years of struggle, that we won the right to invite international observers to come and observe the elections,” he explained.
He further criticized the actions of the then PNC-led APNU+AFC administration during the 2020 elections, which he claimed obstructed international observers from attending the recount process. “In 2020, during the Covid pandemic, they delayed the declaration of results and blocked observer teams from attending the recount,” Nandlall said.
In May 2020, the Carter Center expressed disappointment over the APNU+AFC Government’s refusal to allow accredited international observers to return to Guyana for the ongoing electoral process.
Nandlall stressed that the presence of international observer missions is crucial for certifying elections as free, fair, and democratic. “The more observer teams we have, the safer the electoral process,” he concluded, reiterating the government’s commitment to ensuring a transparent electoral environment.
