APNU Coalition Declines to Sign ERC Code of Conduct

News

The APNU Coalition has officially stated its reasons for not signing the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) Code of Conduct. While the coalition acknowledges the importance of a Code aimed at promoting peaceful, respectful, and lawful campaigning, it expressed a lack of confidence in the ERC’s impartiality and independence.

The coalition criticized the ERC for becoming what they termed a “political stooge” under the current PPP government, alleging that it has failed to fulfill its constitutional functions. As a result, the APNU Coalition believes the ERC is unfit to sponsor a Code of Conduct for peaceful election campaigning, labeling the signing ceremony as a political gimmick that would not contribute to free and fair elections or serve the interests of the Guyanese people.

In a statement, the APNU Coalition reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a peaceful and lawful campaign, emphasizing the constitutional rights of Guyanese citizens to freedom of expression, association, and assembly. They pledged that all individuals should be able to vote freely for their party of choice.

Looking ahead, the APNU Coalition committed to creating conditions that would enable the ERC to realign itself with its constitutional mandate, should they assume government.
