Tamesh Jagmohan Denies Allegations of Gold Smuggling Amid Controversy

News

News Source Guyana Reports : Billionaire businessman and gold dealer Tamesh Jagmohan has firmly denied accusations of involvement in a gold smuggling ring, claims brought to light by his former gold buying agent, Junior Baksh. In a late-night statement on Monday, Jagmohan described the allegations as “false and damaging.”

Jagmohan clarified that Baksh had served as his gold buying agent several years ago but their professional relationship soured due to concerns over alleged “unethical business practices” attributed to Baksh. He emphasized that he has consistently conducted his business in strict compliance with Guyanese law.

The timing of Baksh’s allegations, which Jagmohan characterized as “unfounded,” has raised suspicions regarding the motives behind their release. “All legal options are being considered, including proceedings against Mr. Baksh and any individuals who may have influenced or facilitated these statements,” Jagmohan stated.

The allegations surfaced in an interview conducted by senior journalist Travis Chase back in March, which was not released until recently. The interview, featuring Baksh, was shared on the social media pages of political and rights activist Melissa “Melly Mel” Atwell, who subsequently released a more than 40-minute long segment of the discussion.

In the interview, Baksh made serious claims, alleging that Jagmohan and other business figures are connected to senior government officials in a scheme involving the importation of Venezuelan gold. He alleged that this gold was mixed with local gold before being declared and sold to the Gold Board by senior dealers. Baksh also claimed that these operations involved payments to government officials through intermediaries.

Concerns over the movement of Brazilian and Venezuelan gold into Guyana, as well as methods of money laundering linked to illegal gold exportation, have been escalating among local and US authorities. This scrutiny is not new for Jagmohan, who previously denied similar allegations in August 2024 regarding investigations by US authorities related to gold smuggling and money laundering.

As the situation develops, Jagmohan’s strong rebuttal sets the stage for potential legal action, while the broader implications of Baksh’s allegations continue to reverberate through the Guyanese gold industry.
