WIN calls victimization over Campaign’s Manager Arrest

  • News

In a Social Media Statement WIN Wrote : The WIN party has expressed deep concern over the treatment of its campaign manager, Maria Basheer, and several supporters who were taken into custody on Wednesday evening while promoting an upcoming party meeting.

Basheer, along with the driver of their vehicle, a taxi driver, a deejay, and two other WIN members, were held overnight before being released on $200,000 bail this morning. During their detention, their mobile devices were confiscated, and multiple requests to contact their attorney were denied.

Basheer, who was experiencing her menstrual cycle, reported that she was also refused permission to change her sanitary napkins until she threatened to “paint the walls red.” The WIN team had followed all necessary regulations during their outreach, including turning off their music system near the police station and hospital.

The party views this incident as a form of victimization, alleging that the police force is being used as a tool by the PPP/C administration. They highlighted that other political parties, including the PPP/C, have conducted similar outreach efforts without facing arrest or harassment.

Additionally, WIN pointed out that a police officer was recently transferred for shaking hands with WIN’s presidential candidate, Azruddin Mohamed, indicating a pattern of discrimination against them.

WIN is calling for equal treatment for all political parties as they prepare for national and regional elections. The party urges international observer missions currently in Guyana to recognize and address the ongoing attempts to silence their campaign.
