Arson Suspected in New Amsterdam House and Car Fire

A house and a car were destroyed by fire in New Amsterdam, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) on Wednesday, with authorities treating the incident as a suspected case of arson.

Keith Chester, a resident of Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, reported that he left his home around 8:00 PM to attend a nearby wake. Just 30 minutes later, he received the alarming news that his property was engulfed in flames and rushed back home.

“When I got home, my neighbors were running to get the car out, but the fire was already spreading to the house. The car was burned, and the ceiling was on fire—everything upstairs was destroyed,” Chester recounted.

The New Amsterdam Fire Station was alerted, and firefighters responded promptly to control the blaze.

Chester recalled a similar incident three years ago when someone attempted to set his house on fire while he was away. He noted that he was informed about that fire as well, but found his property completely destroyed upon his return.

“This isn’t the work of someone from far away; it’s someone from right around here. People see me progressing and want to harm me,” he stated.

Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald confirmed to News Room that the fire is believed to have been intentionally set, and investigations are currently ongoing.
