Attorney Ronald Daniels Among New Candidates for APNU in Upcoming Elections

Outspoken Attorney-at-Law Ronald Daniels is set to appear on the candidates list of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), as announced today by Presidential Candidate Aubrey Norton.

Norton revealed to reporters that the APNU’s list will feature several young and promising individuals, including Daniels. “There are going to be some interesting young people; Ronald Daniels, for instance, will be on our list. We think he is a very good attorney and a young man with a lot of potential,” Norton stated.

Additionally, former Deputy Commissioner of Police Paul Williams and prominent attorney Dexter Todd will also join the APNU’s list of candidates. Expelled AFC members Juretha Fernandes, Sherod Duncan, and Ricky Ramsaroop are included as well.

Opposition Member of Parliament and PNCR Executive Roysdale Forde, who previously challenged Norton for the PNCR leadership in 2024, will also be featured on the list. “I can assure you that Roysdale will be there among others,” said Norton.

When asked about Region 10 Opposition MP Jermaine Figueira, Norton mentioned that Figueira has been approached but has yet to complete the necessary paperwork to be included. “I have always said there is a place for Jermaine Figueira in the PNCR and the APNU. At least, up until now, he hasn’t signed, but once he is disposed to becoming a member of the list, he will be,” Norton added.

As the APNU prepares for the September 1 General and Regional Elections, it faces challenges, including the resignation of several members. Three Members of Parliament—Amanza Walton-Desir, Geeta Chandan-Edmond, and Natasha Singh-Lewis—have resigned from both Parliament and the PNCR. Additionally, Region Four Regional Chairman Daniel Seeram and Regional Vice Chairman Samuel Sandy have also stepped down.

Chandan-Edmond, Seeram, and Sandy have endorsed the governing People’s Progressive Party, while Walton-Desir has launched her own party, Forward Guyana. Walton-Desir has voiced concerns about feeling silenced under Norton’s leadership.

In response, Norton stated that Singh-Lewis distanced herself from the PNCR Executive out of loyalty to the late Amna Ally, while Walton-Desir had been assured of her removal from the Candidate List but chose to leave and form her own party instead.

“I have engaged virtually all of the persons to query their interest in being on the list, and I have attempted to sideline no one. However, sometimes, especially with foreign policy, if you do not receive reports from those involved, it can be detrimental. The PNCR is a strong and unbreakable institution, and no number of defections or resignations will cause it to fall,” Norton emphasized.

The APNU, along with other parties contesting the upcoming elections, will submit their List of Candidates to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) on Nomination Day, July 14.
