CANU Seizes 222 THC‑Infused Drinks Hidden in Cargo at CJIA

News

The Customs Anti‑Narcotics Unit (CANU) has seized 222 THC‑infused beverages hidden inside cargo shipments at Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), authorities confirmed today. The products were designed to resemble ordinary soft drinks, raising concerns that they could be mistakenly consumed by unsuspecting members of the public, particularly young people.

CANU warned that cannabis and all cannabis‑derived products, including THC drinks, are illegal in Guyana and that possession, importation or distribution can result in serious criminal charges. The unit said the disguised beverages pose significant health and safety risks. Consumers may experience impaired judgment, panic attacks, hallucinations and, in some cases, accidental overdose. Children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to harm from such products.

Officials urged the public not to buy or consume unknown drinks and to be alert to suspicious imported beverages. CANU advised members of the public to avoid handling any suspicious shipments or packages and to report information confidentially. Reports can be made by telephone at 592‑227‑3503 or 592‑226‑0431, or by email at guyana_ews@canu.gov.gy.

CANU described the seizure as part of a response to a new and emerging drug trend and said it is taking strong action to protect the public. Investigations into the source and intended distribution of the seized items are ongoing.
