Airbnb, the popular platform for travelers seeking short-term rentals of rooms, apartments, and homes, has seen notable growth, particularly in Caribbean destinations. In Guyana, the government is taking steps to ensure that Airbnb operators adhere to specific standards through a formal licensing process.

Kamrul Baksh, Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), recently reported that since the licensing program commenced in 2022, 115 properties and 577 rooms have been officially licensed.
In an interview with News Room, Susan Rodrigues, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, emphasized that all Airbnb operations in Guyana must obtain licensing through the GTA. She outlined the necessity for operators to meet established standards before receiving approval.
“There are some standards that you have to achieve before you are a licensed operator,” Rodrigues noted. She added that licensed listings can be showcased internationally, facilitating broader reach for operators.
The licensing process also aids the government in monitoring and regulating the sector effectively, providing a clearer understanding of the growth of Airbnb accommodations across the nation. However, the Minister pointed out that numerous operators continue to operate informally.
“Many people are operating their Airbnb informally, but once they come to us, we license them,” Rodrigues stated.
As Guyana’s tourism industry expands, spurred by its increasing appeal as an eco-tourism destination, business travel hub, and venue for major events, the government is encouraging more operators to seek licensing. With visitor numbers expected to keep rising, ensuring that Airbnb operators comply with required standards is crucial for maintaining quality and safety in the accommodation sector.
