Guyanese Taxi Driver Convicted for Driving Under the Influence

Purmeshwar Dhaniram, a 41-year-old taxi driver residing at Lot 8 Bounty Hall, has been charged with driving while his breath alcohol level exceeded the legal limit. The offence occurred on Saturday, March 7, 2026, in Bounty Hall, Essequibo Coast.

The charge was filed under Section 39A (1) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02, as amended by the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic (Amendment) Act 17 of 2022.

The matter was heard at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, with His Worship, Magistrate Mr. Ravindra Mohabir, presiding over the proceedings. Dhaniram was read the charge and pleaded guilty.

Magistrate Mohabir imposed a fine of $200,000 on Dhaniram. Should he fail to pay the fine, he faces a potential six-month prison sentence. This case underscores ongoing efforts to enforce road safety laws and address driving under the influence in the region.
