Jagdeo Confident of PPP Victory but Warns of Election Risks

General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, expressed strong confidence in the party’s ability to win the upcoming general elections but cautioned supporters about potential risks in the electoral process. Speaking to over 12,000 supporters at a fundraising dinner at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre on Friday evening, Jagdeo declared, “We will win the elections; it’s just a matter of how much. We want to win by a landslide.”

Jagdeo emphasized the importance of vigilance as the elections approach, particularly concerning attempts by the opposition to create a minority government in Parliament. He warned that divisive tactics, including spreading rumors to split the vote, could undermine the PPP’s success. “There are lots of risks because people are trying, through rumors, to split the votes,” he cautioned.

The Vice President highlighted the impact of social media on public perception, noting that minor issues could overshadow the government’s substantial efforts to improve citizens’ living standards. “People sometimes form their opinions about politics today based on online information rather than facts and reality,” he said.

Reflecting on past experiences, Jagdeo recalled the challenges faced during the Donald Ramotar administration (2011-2015) when the PPP did not control Parliament. He underscored the consequences of that minority government, which saw budget cuts that stymied economic development. “You remember what happened when we did not control the parliament in 2011? They cut $90 billion from the Budget,” he reminded the audience.

Jagdeo expressed concerns over the potential candidacy of US-sanctioned businessman Azruddin Mohamed, warning of the implications for Guyana’s sovereignty, particularly regarding the ongoing border controversy with Venezuela. “Just imagine if Mohamed becomes President… who would the US Government really support? We’d lose that security that we have on the border,” he stated.

Ahead of the September 1, 2025, General and Regional Elections, Jagdeo noted that 22 political parties have indicated their intention to contest, with 19 symbols approved by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM). Despite this, he asserted that more citizens are recognizing the benefits of a PPP government.

“We’ve been able to reach out to non-traditional supporters of the PPP,” he said, adding that the party has gained traction in Amerindian and Afro-Guyanese communities previously deterred by perceptions of racism. “Now, they’re coming to us because they see their future will be better secured under the PPP Government,” Jagdeo concluded, urging supporters to carry this message back to their communities.
