News Source Guyana Reports : The Ministry of Education has launched a series of targeted interventions aimed at improving Mathematics pass rates at both the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) and Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) levels, Minister of Education Sonia Parag has announced.

Speaking during a recent interview, Minister Parag acknowledged that while Mathematics pass rates have been gradually improving, the numbers remain unsatisfactory and the challenge appears to be regional in nature.
Among the short-term measures introduced is the Digital School initiative, which provides online Mathematics lessons across all grade levels. The Ministry has ensured that Grade 10 and 11 students in every school are signed up for the classes, with Mathematics drawing particularly high enrolment.
“I believe though that we needed to have stronger intervention in that particular subject area,” Parag said.
Robust training for Mathematics teachers has also been rolled out over the last few months to sharpen assessment techniques, with plans for the training to become increasingly targeted. A review of the Mathematics curriculum at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) is also being considered as part of the longer-term strategy.
One of the more innovative interventions introduced this year is the “Maths Tents” outreach model, which brings students from multiple schools together at strategic locations for focused instruction every Saturday. The programme extends beyond the coastland into hinterland communities.
“You will have communities and students from various schools coming together and being taught,” the Minister explained.
Parag stressed that Mathematics remains a priority given Guyana’s rapid transformation and its increasing reliance on technology, digital systems and critical thinking.
“Mathematics is a key component of that,” she said, expressing confidence that the combined interventions will deliver a meaningful turnaround in pass rates. Plans are also being developed to address improvements in literacy and numeracy more broadly.
