Paper committal proceedings officially commenced on Monday for four individuals charged in connection with the October 2025 deadly explosion at a Mobil gas station on Regent Street.

The hearing, held virtually, involves defendants Daniel Alexander Ramirez Poedemo, Alexander Bettencourt, Johnny Boodram, and Krystal La Cruz. The explosion tragically claimed the life of young Soraya Bourne.

The session began with a brief delay due to the late arrival of Krystal La Cruz to the virtual platform. Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty also addressed the absence of attorney Mikhel Pooran, who represents Johnny Boodram. Despite a request from the defense for a postponement or a delay until 2:00 p.m., the Magistrate ruled that because the session was a paper committal—which relies on written evidence rather than live testimony—there was no necessity to delay further.

Prosecutor Mandel Moore confirmed that the prosecution has submitted the necessary statements, documents, and exhibits. During the afternoon session, the court proceeded with the tendering of more than 100 documents. The matter has been adjourned until Tuesday for continuation.

This legal process aims to determine if there is sufficient evidence to commit the four remaining accused to stand trial in the High Court.

The case has been marked by several notable developments, including:

Case Status: Two other men originally charged in the incident, Ramesh Pramdeo and Wayne Correia, were freed in April after a magistrate upheld a no-case submission.

Defendant Testimony: Throughout the proceedings, Daniel Alexander Ramirez Poedemo, identified by authorities as the alleged mastermind, has repeatedly claimed full responsibility for the explosion, requesting the release of his co-defendants.

DPP Decision: Following legal review, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) opted to continue the prosecution against the remaining four defendants.

The proceedings are expected to continue on Tuesday as the court works through the extensive evidence provided by the prosecution.
