A chilling case of violence has gripped the nation as authorities confirm that a serving member of the Guyana Police Force has confessed to the murder of 26-year-old Cuban national Dailen Paneque Gómez.

Crime Chief and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Wendell Blanhum, identified the suspect in custody as Police Constable Randy Thomas. According to investigators, Thomas, who was reportedly involved in a romantic relationship with Gómez, has provided a detailed confession regarding the premeditated killing.
Thomas told detectives that he arranged to meet Gómez on the morning of June 18, 2026. He drove her to the Enmore Backdam area, where an argument ensued. Thomas claimed that during the confrontation, Gómez assaulted him. He then allegedly produced an unlicensed firearm and, in a disturbing act, used a teddy bear as a makeshift silencer before shooting her in the head.
The investigation revealed a calculated effort to hide the crime:
Preparation: Thomas reportedly confessed to purchasing the rope used to drag Gómez’s body into the bushes from a Chinese supermarket in Mahaica on the day of the murder.
Cleanup: After disposing of the body, Thomas returned to his Mahaica residence and used hand sanitizer to clean the interior of his vehicle.
Evidence Disposal: Thomas allegedly admitted to throwing Gómez’s mobile phone and the spent shell from a bridge at Unity, ECD. He also claimed to have discarded the teddy bear along the roadway and disposed of the firearm in nearby bushes.
Detectives are currently conducting extensive searches for the discarded firearm and other key pieces of evidence.
The breakthrough in the case came after sustained investigative work by detectives at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, which led to the discovery of Gómez’s decomposed body in a clump of bushes on Wednesday evening, June 24, 2026. The discovery of the body directly led to the identification and arrest of Constable Thomas.
The Guyana Police Force continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this brutal act as the nation mourns the loss of the young woman.
