A 26-year-old Prison Officer from Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara, was arrested on Friday after being caught with 502.2 grams of cannabis at Mazaruni Prison.
According to Police Headquarters, the officer was subjected to a search when his bulletproof vest appeared unusually bulky. During the search, conducted in his presence, authorities discovered a transparent parcel containing leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis concealed within the vest.
The narcotic was reported to the police, and officers visited the prison to collect the substance, which was weighed at 474.6 grams in front of the suspect.
Subsequent inquiries led to a search of the officer’s living quarters within the prison compound. There, an additional black parcel containing a transparent package with more suspected cannabis was found on his bed. This second quantity weighed 27.6 grams.
In total, the cannabis amounted to 502.2 grams. The suspect, along with the confiscated narcotics, was escorted to the Bartica Police Station, where the cannabis was officially lodged. The officer remains in custody as investigations continue.
