Seven Ex-Inmates Receive Tool Kits to Aid Reintegration into Society

As part of the Ministry of Home Affairs’ ‘Fresh Start’ programme, seven former inmates have received tool kits designed to assist their reintegration into society. This initiative, executed through the Guyana Prison Service (GPS), aims to reduce criminal recidivism by providing ex-convicts with the resources needed for successful re-entry.

Among the recipients, Lennox Syfox received a welding kit, while Tulaseam Kumar was awarded a complete tailoring kit. Additionally, four ex-inmates—Matthew Johnson, Victor Kippins, Raphael Mantos, and Romel Rowley—each received a brush cutter, and Winston Moriah was given carpentry tools.

During recent handing-over ceremonies, Prisoners’ Welfare and Correctional Officer Tassa McGarrell emphasized that the programme focuses on aiding ex-convicts in accessing resources and providing motivation for their success.

The selection of ex-inmates for the Fresh Start tool kits was based on several criteria, including participation in training programmes, family support, and the development of post-release plans while in prison.

The GPS has reported a significant reduction in recidivism rates for 2024, indicating a positive trend in the rehabilitation of offenders within the country’s correctional system. In total, 28 inmates have received tools and equipment this year to help them earn sustainable incomes in various fields, including cosmetology, tailoring, welding, carpentry, joinery, and landscaping.

This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to fostering rehabilitation and supporting former inmates as they reintegrate into society.
