Taxi Driver Granted Bail in $29 Million Land Fraud Case

A 30-year-old taxi driver from West Coast Berbice has been granted bail after facing charges related to two alleged land fraud schemes amounting to approximately $29 million.

Jomo Campbell, of Lot 18, No. 5 Village, Berbice, appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where he pleaded not guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit a felony.

The prosecution alleges that between April 1 and May 22, 2025, Campbell conspired with known and unknown individuals to fraudulently obtain $13 million by forging documents associated with Parcel 2404, Block 3, Plantation Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD). The forged documents were reportedly intended to falsely certify authorization for the sale of the land, facilitating a fraudulent financial transaction.

In a separate matter, Campbell is accused of conspiring to acquire $16 million between February 28 and March 19, 2025, under similar circumstances related to Parcel 2353, Block 3, also located in Plantation Providence, EBD.

Represented by attorney Yuborn Allicock, Campbell denied the allegations and entered a not-guilty plea for both charges. Allicock emphasized that Campbell has no prior convictions or pending charges and is a father in a common-law relationship. He argued that Campbell is neither a flight risk nor a danger to society and has cooperated with investigators.

However, the prosecution objected to bail, expressing concerns that Campbell might be involved in additional ongoing investigations of a similar nature. The prosecutor informed the court that Campbell allegedly conspired with others to forge legal documents to facilitate the illegal land sales, underlining the seriousness of the charges.

Despite the prosecution’s objections, the magistrate granted Campbell bail in the amount of $350,000 for each charge, totaling $700,000. As conditions for his release, he is required to surrender his passport and report to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) every Friday.

The case has been adjourned to July 16 as investigations continue.
