A fatal accident early Wednesday morning has resulted in the death of a car driver after he allegedly failed to stop at a designated stop sign and crashed into a truck on Heroes Highway.

The incident occurred around 5:30 AM at the intersection of the Eastern Carriageway of Heroes Highway and Mocha Main Access Road. The vehicles involved were a motor lorry, #GAH 9771, driven by 29-year-old Arif Haniff of Cove and John, East Coast Demerara, and motor car #PAH 7906, operated by 64-year-old Charles Richards of Kitty, Georgetown.
According to preliminary investigations, Richards was traveling east along Mocha Main Access Road when he approached the intersection. Despite the presence of a stop sign and stop line, he did not comply with the traffic regulations, proceeding into the path of the southbound lorry, resulting in a violent collision.
The impact caused significant damage to both vehicles. Richards sustained injuries to his head and other parts of his body. Emergency medical services were called to the scene, but upon arrival, the medical team pronounced him dead.

His body was subsequently taken to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Mortuary for cold storage, pending a post-mortem examination.
Police examined both vehicles, and a Notice of Intended Prosecution has been served to the lorry driver, Haniff. A breathalyzer test was conducted, revealing no traces of alcohol in his system. He is currently in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations into the fatal incident.
The Guyana Police Force continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
