News

As the University of Guyana prepares for its 2025 graduation ceremonies this November, three sets of siblings are poised to celebrate their achievements, showcasing the power of unity, love, and resilience.

The Jarvis Brothers: Faith Through Grief

Jerron and Andrew Jarvis are among the graduates, with Jerron earning a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Andrew receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Occupational Health and Safety. Their journey has been marked by immense loss, including the death of their mother, Nurse Penelope Sertimer-Jarvis, just two months before graduation.

Jerron reflects, “She always told me I’d be a doctor one day. Though she isn’t here, I know she’s proud.” Andrew, who juggled work as an auto electrician and studies, credits his faith: “It was hard, but with God’s mercy, I pulled through.”

The Bakhsh Siblings: Determined to Succeed

Amelia and Julio Bakhsh will also graduate this November, with Amelia earning a Bachelor of Science in General Psychology and Julio a Bachelor of Science in Applied and Exploration Geology. “It’s a hallmark for our family,” Amelia says, highlighting their journey from humble beginnings. Julio balanced work and fatherhood, graduating with a 3.8 GPA, while Amelia, a full-time teacher, achieved a 3.7 GPA. “The road wasn’t easy, but faith and family got us here,” she adds.

The Baljit Sisters: From Village Dreams to University Reality

Sisters Devika and Nandani Baljit, from Betsy Ground Village, have made history as the first in their family to graduate from university. Devika will earn a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science, and Nandani will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy.

“This moment feels like a dream we all shared,” Devika notes, acknowledging their parents’ sacrifices. Their studies faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, but they supported each other across distances. Devika plans to work at the New Amsterdam Hospital Laboratory, while Nandani aims to become a certified professional accountant.

A Collective Celebration

As these siblings prepare to cross the stage this November, their achievements reflect the strength of family bonds and shared dreams. The University of Guyana, celebrating its 62nd anniversary, continues to be a beacon of transformation, producing over 71,000 alumni who contribute to the nation’s legacy of knowledge and resilience.
