Major Road Upgrades Planned for Georgetown

News

Public Works Minister Juan Edghill has announced significant upcoming upgrades to major roads in and around Georgetown to enhance traffic flow and improve connectivity. Speaking on the Starting Point Podcast, he highlighted the government’s commitment to rapidly advancing road works in the city.

Minister Edghill noted that areas like Brickdam are in need of urgent repairs due to deterioration caused by heavy truck traffic. A contract has already been awarded to address these issues. He listed several projects in progress or planned, including:

Repairs on Brickdam

Upgrades to Church Street

Improvements on North Road

Expansion of Thomas Lands

Work on the area between Camp Street and Queens College

Expansion on both sides of Carifesta Avenue

The Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining access to schools and other facilities while the roadwork is underway, requiring strategic planning to manage traffic flows.

Further, Edghill noted that the Ministry’s maintenance crew has been active in upgrading roads in various neighborhoods, including Agricola, West Ruimveldt, Lodge, Wortmanville, and Albousytown. He pointed out that the aggressive maintenance efforts have led to public complaints about diversions due to ongoing work, indicating the scale of improvements.

Looking ahead, Edghill acknowledged that while many enhancements have been made, further developments are necessary, such as fixing markets and addressing dilapidated buildings. He suggested that City Hall should take initiative in maintaining land filled with bushes, potentially generating revenue through taxes.

The Ministry of Works has secured substantial funding in this year’s budget for various road projects across the nation, underscoring the government’s dedication to improving infrastructure in Georgetown and beyond.
