Government Addresses Concerns Over Bullying and Reckless Driving

News

The Government is taking decisive action to tackle growing concerns over bullying, reckless driving, and other societal issues, particularly those affecting children. Minister of Human Services and Social Protection, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, announced that consultations are underway among the Ministries of Education, Human Services, and Home Affairs to identify solutions for these challenges.

Dr. Persaud emphasized the urgency of addressing these issues, noting that lives are being lost due to reckless driving, bullying, and conflict among children. She stated, “It is heartbreaking to see children perpetrating violence on other children. This points to deeper issues, including what children are exposed to at home and how it affects their conflict management and self-perception.”

The Minister stressed that addressing these problems requires a multi-faceted approach rather than quick fixes or isolated solutions. Engaging with schools and communities is essential to consider the mental health of all parties involved, the school environment, and the law.

Dr. Persaud pointed out that recent incidents, including children dying in road accidents and students engaging in bullying, reflect broader societal issues needing coordinated intervention.

To support families, the Ministry has enhanced its parenting programme, implemented over the past two years. This programme includes a parenting workbook designed to help families effectively engage with and support their children.

Dr. Persaud posed critical questions to highlight program aims: “How do you discipline without abuse? How do you support children with special needs? How do parents empower their children while addressing early childhood development, such as learning or developmental delays?”

UNICEF is providing technical support for this initiative, which will involve in-person sessions. Parents can access the programme through the Ministry or community-based interventions.

This comprehensive strategy reflects the Government’s commitment to fostering a safer, more supportive environment for children and families across Guyana.
