Regional News : Ralph Gonsalves Loses Power in St. Vincent Elections

News

St. Vincent Times Reports | Ralph Gonsalves, the prominent Caribbean politician, has failed to secure a sixth consecutive term in the 2025 elections, signaling a major shift in the political landscape of St. Vincent. Early election results indicate that Gonsalves’ Unity Labour Party (ULP) was defeated by the Opposition New Democratic Party (NDP).

The election highlighted a clear ideological divide between the ULP and the NDP. While the ULP campaigned on maintaining the current foreign policy direction, the NDP advocated for a strategic pivot towards closer relations with China and an expansion of the country’s Citizenship by Investment (CBI) program.

Each major party fielded 15 candidates, along with two independent female candidates who also participated in the electoral contest.

Gonsalves, who first assumed power by defeating the NDP in 2001, has been a dominant figure in Vincentian politics for over two decades. His unprecedented longevity in office marks a significant chapter in the nation’s modern political history. The defeat not only ends his tenure but also reflects the electorate’s desire for change amidst evolving political dynamics.

As the dust settles on the elections, the new government will face pressing challenges and opportunities ahead. Further details about the transition of power and the incoming administration’s policy directions are eagerly anticipated in the coming days.
