Big Smith News Watch Reports | A 61-year-old clothes vendor, Nigel Whyte, appeared before Magistrate Annette Singh at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, facing a charge of larceny. Whyte pleaded not guilty to the accusation.
The charge alleges that on October 28, 2025, at Water Street, Georgetown, Whyte stole a Samsung smartphone valued at $55,000 belonging to Noel Bassant.
In court, Whyte’s attorney argued that her client, a long-time vendor, has only one prior conviction from 14 years ago and has had no further legal issues since that time. She requested reasonable bail for Whyte, noting that he has no pending matters in any other court.
The prosecutor did not object to granting bail but highlighted that the stolen phone has not been recovered. It was reported that CCTV footage showed Whyte removing the phone from the complainant’s bag; however, Whyte denied any knowledge of the theft.
Magistrate Singh granted bail in the amount of $40,000 and adjourned the matter to December 5 for further proceedings.
