Today, on International Human Rights Day, Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman is set to deliver her ruling on the constitutional questions arising in the politically charged extradition proceedings against Opposition Leader-in-waiting Azruddin Mohamed. As we observe a day dedicated to upholding the dignity and rights of every individual, We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) finds it imperative to address the alarming erosion of these fundamental principles in Guyana.

WIN reaffirms its full respect for the judiciary and the rule of law. However, we cannot, in good conscience, overlook the escalating political persecution orchestrated by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) against Mr. Mohamed and the WIN movement. The environment surrounding these proceedings has become heavily tainted by state interference, political animosity, and deliberate manipulation of public opinion.

At the center of this misconduct is Attorney General Anil Nandlall. His relentless public commentary, partisan rhetoric, and aggressive political framing of the case have breached every standard of neutrality expected from Guyana’s chief legal officer. His prejudicial statements aim to intimidate, influence, and shape public perception of a case that is currently sub judice.

This behavior is not accidental; it is part of a clear and deliberate strategy by the PPP to weaponize the legal system against a significant political challenger and to undermine a movement that has gained national traction and secured the trust of the Guyanese people.

These abuses should also be viewed in the context of the PPP’s ongoing assault on democratic norms. It has now been five weeks since Parliament convened, and all Members of Parliament were sworn in. Yet, the PPP-aligned Speaker, Manzoor Nadir, continues to refuse to call the constitutionally required meeting to elect the Leader of the Opposition, a position that rightfully belongs to Mr. Azruddin Mohamed. This follows a four-month delay in reconvening Parliament, extending beyond all reasonable expectations.

Together, these actions reveal a troubling pattern: delay the Opposition, obstruct its leadership, malign its leader publicly, and misuse state authority to suppress political competition.

On this International Human Rights Day, WIN calls on every Guyanese, every civil society organization, and the international community to take decisive action. We renew our appeals to the United Nations, the European Union, and the CARICOM Secretary-General and Chairman to intervene with urgency, as the ongoing pattern of political persecution and institutional manipulation threatens the very integrity of our democracy. A democracy cannot thrive where political intimidation, legal manipulation, and institutional abuse are left unchecked. We urge these institutions to stand with the Guyanese people at this critical moment to ensure that justice and democracy are not trampled by political power.

WIN encourages our supporters and all Guyanese who value justice to remain vigilant, resolute, and steadfast. We will continue to pursue every lawful avenue to defend the rights of Mr. Mohamed, protect our supporters from political intimidation, and safeguard the democratic essence of our nation.
