GPF Ranks Now Required to Obtain CSEC Passes in Mathematics and English

The ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) who have not yet obtained passes in Mathematics and English through the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations are now mandated to achieve these qualifications.

This directive was announced on Monday during the Regional Division 4A Annual Christmas Luncheon and Awards Ceremony, where Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond emphasized that education is viewed as a national security investment and a “non-negotiable” requirement, as charged by President Dr. Irfaan Ali.

Minister Walrond stated that all ranks must secure passes in Mathematics and English within the next three years. Additionally, she urged all ranks to register on the Guyana Digital School platform to aid in their academic advancement. “I want to charge you to take hold of your future and take advantage of the opportunities presented to you, so that you will be adequately equipped to be better servicemen and women,” she encouraged.

Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken echoed the importance of this educational initiative, revealing that a meeting with President Ali led to the decision that all Constables and Sergeants without CXC passes must enroll in courses to complete the required subjects. “Constables to Sergeants who are not with their CXCs, please enroll. We are going to have it done,” Hicken asserted.

He highlighted that enhancing the academic qualifications of ranks will significantly improve the performance and professionalism of the GPF, encouraging officers to pursue further studies. Notably, he mentioned that tuition at the University of Guyana is currently free, presenting an opportunity for continued education.

This educational push is part of a broader effort to modernize the GPF, ensuring that ranks are better prepared to meet the evolving demands of law enforcement in the country.
