VP Jagdeo Affirms Support for U.S. Anti-Drug Trafficking Efforts Amid Military Concerns

In response to Venezuela’s complaints about the ongoing build-up of U.S. military assets in the region, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo stated that the Guyana government is not aware of any specific actions being planned by the United States against Venezuela. However, he expressed strong support for any initiatives that combat drug trafficking.

During a press conference on Thursday, Jagdeo emphasized Guyana’s commitment to collaborating with the U.S. in the fight against drug trafficking. “We support any fight against drug traffickers and we will work with the United States of America to collaboratively support all of their activities at blocking drugs from going to the United States or from coming to Guyana. That was our stated objective long before their presence in the region,” he said.

He highlighted that discussions between Guyana and the U.S. regarding security partnerships have been well documented. In recent months, the two countries have signed several agreements aimed at curbing transnational crime and controlling the flow of drugs in the region, while also safeguarding Guyana’s territorial integrity.

“As far as we are concerned, we have engaged with the United States of America. They have assured us that they would support us in protecting our territorial integrity and sovereignty,” Jagdeo noted.

He added that the U.S. has committed to securing assets in Guyanese waters as part of their collaborative efforts. The U.S. continues to increase its military presence in the Caribbean, applying pressure on the Venezuelan government as part of broader regional security initiatives.
