Animal Welfare Activists Raise Alarm Over Neglected Horse in Mon Repos

News

Animal welfare activists are sounding the alarm after receiving reports of a horse allegedly neglected for over a week on Mon Repos School Road. Concerned citizens reached out to the Animal Welfare Activists of Guyana (AWAG), highlighting the dire situation.

The message described the horse as being tied up in the hot sun and mud for an extended period, raising concerns about its health and well-being. “This horse is in Mon Repos School Road tied up for like one week in the sun and mud,” stated the citizen. “After the police intervened, it remains in poor conditions.”

AWAG is urging residents in the Mon Repos area to provide immediate assistance by offering water and grass to the horse. They have also called on the community to identify the owner and encourage them to contact AWAG directly. The organization intends to issue a warning notice to the owner regarding the neglect.

Neglect of animals is considered a crime in Guyana, punishable by up to six months in jail under both old and new Anti-Cruelty Laws. Horses, being herd animals, require companionship, access to water, food, and shade. Keeping them tied in one spot for extended periods is deemed a form of cruelty and neglect.

AWAG is also requesting locals to check the horse’s feet to see if it is shod, as this can indicate further neglect.

Activists encourage everyone to share this message to raise awareness about the situation and to help ensure the horse receives the care it urgently needs. The community’s involvement is crucial in addressing this form of animal cruelty and fostering a safer environment for all animals.

For further support or to report similar cases, residents are encouraged to contact AWAG directly.
